Using Release Delivery Metrics to Drive Better Performance
Measuring release delivery performance, especially in DevOps teams fully implementing a Continuous Integration / Continuous Delivery (CI / CD) cycle can be challenging. Do you count the lines of code or the number of features delivered? Do you rely on outside measures like user satisfaction or business value delivered?
The DORA (DevOps Research and Assessment) report, first published in 2014 and recently in 2023, found that high-performing teams have significantly higher deployment frequencies, shorter lead times for changes, lower change failure rates, and faster MTTRs than low-performing teams. Based on these findings, they developed a set of performance metrics for release delivery:
- Deployment frequency (DF)
- Mean Lead Time for Changes (MLTC)
- Change Failure Rate (CFR)
- Mean Time to Recovery (MTTR)
